THE WORKMAN’S CLUB HAULS BACK IT’S WELL WORN DOORS

Wednesday, August 25th saw Dublin’s newest live performance venue, The Workmans’s Club, haul back its well worn doors at 10 Wellington Quay, a stones throw from The Clarence Hotel. While The Venue Bar and The First Floor Bar have been thronged with new patrons for a number of weeks now, hundreds of well known faces from the music community turned out to inspect The Venue, hear the line up of confirmed shows and enjoy a few bevies on the house.

Broody Aussie electro-heads PVT will be the first to tread The Venue boards, with Choice and Mercury Music Prize nominee Fionn Regan, electro drum merchant RSAG and Derry rockers Fighting With Wire among the many acts due to take to The Workman’s Club stage in the coming months. A special one off intimate performance with Damien Dempsey scheduled for September 15th sold out within hours of going on sale. The Workman’s Club will also host a plethora of club nights, from indie to rockabilly, retro to soul. Those in search of foam parties will be unpleasantly surprised. Many unusual and unique gatherings will be announced in the coming weeks, from two floor multi media takeovers to cult film screenings, vintage shopping delights and way beyond.

The Venue sports rows of ripped brown leather seating around the walls and no doubt closer inspection will reveal the sweaty palm prints of many a young Dubliner from over the decades. The Venue Bar – which will be reserved for gig goers during shows, but open to punters at all other times – glows with shabby comfort and an air of familiarity, like going for pints in the local with your Da when you head home for Christmas. The ground floor of The Workman’s Club is a genuine throwback to an era when gigs were heaving, passionate affairs and pints were simply pints.

Climbing the stairs to The First Floor Bar and you step into a quirky purple and silver haze. A wall of floor-to-ceiling windows boast glorious views over the Liffey, the partitions decorated with works by emerging Irish and international artists, which will change on a month by month basis. The First Floor Bar opens to all and sundry throughout the week, with rotating DJs performing nightly and a raft of barkeeps, as adept at making ferocious cocktails as they are at pulling the perfect pint.

There is nothing remotely trendy or suave about The Workman’s Club. There’s a genuine feeling of being in a mates living room, a laid back, don’t mind using a beer-mat kind of place, where no-one is horrified by your logo-less threads or glaring at you for sporting your favourite five year old Dunnes runners. There isn’t a VIP area to be found, though that’s a slight fib as The Third Floor will be developed in the coming months and made available for gatherings of all sorts, but you’re allowed to assume VIP status when it’s your birthday or Bar Mitzvah or you’re simply hosting your first S&M party…

Please enjoy The Workman’s Club responsibly. Open from 6pm daily.
